Calgary is a fast growing city in Alberta, with a population of approximately 1.5 million people it is the third largest city in Canada.  It's known for the Calgary Stampede and its proximity to the Rocky Mountains.

The challenge

Presenting data and content to public 

The City of Calgary provides various electronic data and reports directly to individuals and companies through their e-commerce web site (https://cityonline.calgary.ca/).   Their challenge was to improve the features, functionality and customer experience.


Silver Creek was hired to enhance the CITY online application in several key components including feature enhancements in CRM, SharePoint and Commerce Server, configuration enhancements to boost performance, the design and implementation of new features and server upgrade and configurations. 

The solution

Modernizing the platform

Silver Creek has been working with the City of Calgary on the development of the website since its inception in 2012.  

Application Management - Over this time we have assisted in the modernization of the applications and infrastructure, including upgrades from SharePoint 2007 to 2010 and 2013, upgrades from Dynamics CRM 4 to Dynamics CRM 2011 and upgrade from Microsoft Commerce server 2009 to Sitecore commerce 2011. Silver Creek provides configuration enhancements to boost performance and fixes production issues, including configuration of developer virtual machines (VM). 

UI / UX Design - Silver Creek currently supports development of the CITY Online mobile web site using responsive design techniques to enhance features in SharePoint, Microsoft Dynamics CRM / Commerce Server and other web services.  Enhanced user experience of the front-end web site user experience using JavaScript and CSS. 

System Integrations -  We work side-by-side with City technical teams on production deployments, provides valid time estimations for new enhancements and understands the complex integrations with other systems including EAI, AGIS MAP and PeopleSoft billing.  Implemented City Online Web application enhancements to integrate with internal Web and REST API systems to generate digital products like property tax reports and GIS maps

Systems SupportAs a system administrator, Silver Creek also oversees the ITSM ticketing processes for Dynamics implementations and addresses issues through config / coding remedies as well as through the development and enhancement of system deployment documents.  Conducting incident root cause analysis for application-related issues and providing and executing on recommendations.

Calgary's City Online portal has been an overwhelming success.  Over the decade it has been in operation it has expanded its product catalog to include property reports, geospatial data, maps and drawings, aerial imagery, and documents.  Each transaction is completely self-service which provides convenience to the public, and major cost savings to the city.  A great example of leveraging technology to improve service delivery.
