The Government of Alberta is the provincial level of government for the province of Alberta.
Alberta is the fourth largest province of Canada by size, and has a population of almost 5 million people. There are approximately 27,000 Alberta government employees.

Need a secure platform to share data
The Government of Alberta decided to better manage the sharing of data across all of its ministries. There was an inconsistency in data sharing within and throughout the organization which was ad-hoc, costly, and had no consistency in regards to quality and security controls.
The solution was to establish a Data Management Platform (DMP) that would manage access and make data accessible to Government of Alberta stakeholders in support of critical operational, policy, and legislative functions, processes, and activities.

Silver Creek was the primary contractor providing a dozen resources to the DMP program since its inception of the program. Throughout the last few years we have been deeply entrenched in the design, development and deployment of the DMP.
Platform Development
Silver Creek has played a pivotal role in the overall design and architecture of the platform. Developing and adding architectural patterns depending on the data use case. The Silver Creek development team led the design, coordination, and execution of prototypes and proof of concepts to create logical and physical data models.
Population of Data
Each of the 20+ data sets relate to a different data type from a ministry and each has its own requirements for data structure, architecture, security, access controls, and reporting. Silver Creek had data analysts and architects deeply involved in the solution design, development and integrations necessary. Through rigorous requirements gathering and in-depth analysis of client needs, Silver Creek collaborated with the Government of Alberta stakeholders to accurately define and scope tailored data initiatives.
Data Analytics and Reporting
Power BI data sources were validated and optimized to meet documented data visualization requirements. Using Power BI and Microsoft SQL Server, Silver Creek resources ensured the seamless integration of key data, providing the right level of access to various stakeholders and ensuring that decision-making capabilities were supported by data sources that yielded key insights.

Controlled access to trusted data
Access to data is now centralized and governed in a standardized manner. Any member of the GoA can access data in the DMP directly through their PowerBI pro accounts. Furthermore, this has become the standardized method to share data directly with the public.
Overall cost savings
By transitioning away from costly on-premise servers to more efficient cloud data storage and utilizing storage optimization, such as leveraging data lakes, the overall cost has reduced.
Improved analytics and data science
Due to the centralization of the data, and its secured access controls, the DMP has become the organizations data analytics platform. The success of the DMP has led to it being the platform which now hosts the provinces artificial intelligence lab.
